Cardiology
The
primary goal of the Cardiology Fellowship Program is
to prepare physicians to become accomplished sub-specialists
in Cardiovascular Disease. Our educational program has
been developed in order to allow individual fellows
to become skilled as clinicians, teachers and investigators.
The fellowship begins with intensive experience in Clinical
Cardiology as a broad base for further specialized activities.
The training program emphasizes the development of particular
skills to foster a lifelong enthusiasm for clinical
or basic science research that will lead to improved
understanding of disease processes and, ultimately,
toward advancements in the prevention, diagnosis and
treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease.
The
core Cardiology Fellowship Program is three years in
duration. This program is fully accredited by ACMGE.
Currently there are nine Sub-Specialty Resident positions
in the program with three residents graduating each
year. Through our affiliation agreement with Sparrow
Hospital all fellows are contracted during their course
of training with Sparrow Health Systems.
Fellows
gain exposure to a range of invasive and non-invasive
cardiovascular procedures and actively participate in
coronary angiography including diagnostic and therapeutic
procedures, patient management both pre-operatively
and post-operatively and patient discharge. Additionally,
the fellow will gain exposure to a wide range of general
cardiology patients including both acute and chronic
by actively participating in admissions, diagnostic
or therapeutic procedures, daily patient management
and discharge. The fellow will gain experience in noninvasive
testing by being exposed to a wide range of cardiology
testing procedures and the interpretation of those results.
Fellows will actively participate in the performance,
interpretation and discussion of these testing modalities.
Fellows receive instruction in electro physiology, indications
for testing, appropriate case management both pre and
post operatively, pacemaker placement and monitoring
and therapeutic measures. Fellows gain exposure to a
range of cardiothoracic surgical procedures and actively
participate in monitoring and assessing various parameters
both pre and post operatively, enhancing their ability
to insert and monitor central lines and transesophogeal
echocardiography.
Following completion, fellows will be eligible for board
certification in Cardiovascular Disease. This fellowship
is ACGME accredited.
Interventional
Cardiology Fellowship
Additional fellowship training in interventional cardiology
is available to persons who have completed a cardiology
fellowship. This one-year program is directed by Dr.
Tim Fischell and is housed on our Kalamazoo campus.

Endocrinology,
Diabetes, & Metabolism
With
diabetes, obesity and metabolic problems on the rise,
it is clear that the medical community faces significant
challenges in coming years. The Fellowship in Endocrinology,
Diabetes and Metabolism is designed to train the next
generation of specialists to meet these challenges.
The
Fellowship is directed by Dr. Ved Gossain, a Professor,
Division Chief, an ACP Laureate, and the Swartz Professor
of Medicine. Fellows will be instructed by MSU faculty
who are boarded in Endocrinology as well as experts
in physiology and metabolism.
The
fellowship is a joint effort between MSU and E.W. Sparrow
Hospital. Clinical training sites will include the MSU
Clinical Center Endocrinology Clinic, specializing in
metabolic and thyroid diseases and the Sparrow Regional
Diabetes Center. The Sparrow Regional Diabetes Center
provides services for people with diabetes and their
families. This program was established in 1969 and certified
by the Michigan Department of Community Health in 1995.
The full diabetes center was awarded recognition by
the American Diabetes Association in 1997. The Sparrow
Regional Diabetes Center offers the most comprehensive
services for people with diabetes in the mid-Michigan
area. Fellows will receive inpatient experience at Sparrow
Hospital, a 740-bed regional referral center.The Fellowship
offer s multiple opportunities for clinical and basic
research in collaboration with the Departments of Medicine,
Physiology and Pharmacology.
This
fellowship is ACGME accredited.

Hematology
& Oncology
The Hematology/Oncology Fellowship program available
at Michigan State University offers Fellowships leading
to board eligibility in Hematology and Oncology as well
as combined specialties of Hematology and Oncology.
During the first year, Fellows are predominately involved
in clinical exposure to both hematology and oncology.
In the second year, Fellows are encouraged to develop
a research project with one of the staff members.
Outpatient
clinical activities are located at Ingham Regional Medical
Center, an Affiliate of McLaren Healthcare Corporation.
Inpatients are hospitalized in special oncology units
staffed by oncology nurses, clinical pharmacists, physicians
and occupational therapists. Michigan State University
is a member of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast
and Bowel Project (NSABP), and the Michigan Oncology
Consortium, which is a clinical trail consortium composed
of practicing Michigan oncologists. Both of these groups
offer opportunities for participation in clinical oncology
protocols.
The
Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program at Michigan State
University offers multiple opportunities for clinical
and research experience. Those Residents interested
in protocol design and implementation are encouraged
to participate with the NSABP group and/or with the
Michigan Oncology Consortium. Both of these groups offer
opportunities for participation in clinical oncology
protocols. In addition, statewide hemophilia clinics
are available in the spring, summer, and fall for interested
Fellows.
Multiple opportunities exist for training in basic sciences
with research in the fields of oncogenesis, platinum
research, growth of tumor models, athymic mice, and
other oncologically related areas. Hematology related
research areas include clinical hemophilia, biochemistry
of humoral clotting factors, platelet immunology, iron
overload, and other areas.
Applicants
must successfully complete an Internal Medicine residency
program in the United States before applying for a subspecialty
fellowship. This fellowship is ACGME accredited.

Infectious
Diseases Fellowship
From bird flu to community-acquired MRSA, it seems that
microbes are constantly outwitting established therapies.
Therefore, we are pleased to have the ACGME-accredited
Infectious Diseases Fellowship in the Department of Medicine.
Fellows
will be supervised by faculty of Michigan State University
and will evaluate and manage inpatients at Sparrow Hospital,
a 740-bed regional referral center. As part of the program,
Fellows have significant teaching and leadership responsibilities
with Internal Medicine residents and CHM medical students
in the area of Infectious Diseases.
The
Infectious Diseases Fellowship program available at
Michigan State University offers fellowships leading
to board eligibility in Infectious Diseases. Fellows
are exposed to a full spectrum of infectious problems
in outpatient and inpatient settings. Fellows are encouraged
to develop a research project with one of the faculty.
The
fellowship is directed by Dr. Daniel Havlichek, who
is also Chief of the Infectious Diseases Division. Fellows
have inpatient rotations at Sparrow Hospital and outpatient
experiences as well as research opportunities. Key clinical
experiences will be provided by MSU faculty including
clinicians, HIV experts, researchers, pharmacokineticists
and pediatric infectious diseases specialists. The bone
marrow and organ transplant rotation occurs at Henry
Ford Hospital and Wayne State University. Dr. Khalife
from Sparrow Hospital directs the clinical Microbiology
rotation.
Dr. Vincent Young, a distinguished scientist, is the
Director of Research for the Fellowship. Fellows will
be involved in various research projects either through
MSU or in cooperation with Sparrow Hospital. MSU has
established researchers in the fields of antibiotic
pharmacodynamics, bacterial pathogenesis, food safety
and toxicology, changes intestinal microbiota in settings
of health and disease, epidemiology, and clinical research.
Other research opportunities are available through the
College of Veterinary Medicine or the Department of
Microbiology for appropriate candidates.
