Director, Advanced Medicine Clerkship
The
Advanced Medicine (MED 623) Clerkship builds upon the
skills acquired in MED 608 with a focus on the acutely
ill/critically ill patient. This fourth-year four-week
clerkship is an inpatient, predominately intensive care
unit experience. Students work directly with house officers
and critical care faculty, evaluating and managing ICU
admissions and consults. The clerkship focuses on assessment
skills, formulating, differential diagnosis, and managing
fundamental problems in the acutely ill patient with
an overall goal of familiarizing the student with the
thought processes necessary to managing acutely ill
patients: this clerkship will help prepare students
to manage these situations as a future house officer.
Areas of focus include acid-base and electrolyte disorders,
myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure and
pulmonary edema, acute respiratory insufficiency, acute
renal failure, deep venous thrombosis and management
are taught when appropriate, with an emphasis on indications
for procedures and potential complications. |
