Overview
The Tissue Typing Laboratory at Michigan State University provides histocompatibility support for the renal transplant programs associated with St. Mary’s Hospital and Devoss Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids and Hurley Hospital in Flint. This laboratory also offers HLA antigen typing and antibody screening on a fee for service basis for bone marrow living related family studies as well as typings necessary for procurement of platelet products and disease association studies for area clinics and laboratories. HLA antigen typing is done by serological and molecular methods. Antibody screening and compatibility testing can be done by flow cytometric and standard lymphocytotoxicity assays.

Research programs supported by the laboratory are focused on transplant immunology, immune response mechanisms and molecular diagnostics. The laboratory provides opportunities for both MS and doctoral candidates in the Colleges of Natural Science, Human Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Hematology and oncology fellows (GLCI) and pediatric hematology residents (Hurley) often rotate through the laboratory to gain insight into histocompatibility testing and its application in transplant.
