HealthTeam Practices Engaged in Statewide Quality Improvement Initiative
The HealthTeam practices of Family & Community Medicine, Family Health Center, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics and Human Development Primary Care are all presently engaged in a statewide initiative established to improve quality. This initiative, Improving Performance In Practice (IPIP), is sponsored by the Michigan Primary Care Consortium, with seed funding provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The IPIP program was developed to help physicians improve chronic disease and preventive care in the office-practice setting. It utilizes collaborative activities, educational resources and coaching within the practice. The program provides assistance to practices to maximize their pay-for-performance incentives from insurers. The expected benefits are increased efficiency in office processes, improved care of chronically ill patients, and increased patient and staff satisfaction.
IPIP Program objectives include:
Improve the patient experience in primary care
Engage patients in self-management activities
Improve quality and outcomes
Apply evidence-based guidelines consistently
Use technology to improve practice processes
Reduce waste in the practice, with the outcome of increasing clinician time with patients.
Improve pay-for-performance metrics.
Move practices toward the Patient Centered Medical Home concept
Michigan IPIP assists MSU HealthTeam improvement teams within the practices with coaching by quality experts from industrial settings. The coaches have received special training in the health care culture and assist the practice to implement improved processes. The focus initially is on diabetic and asthma patients, over time plans are to expand to apply to all patients.
