Bone Marrow Recipient Welcomes New ‘Brother’ to MSU’s Cancer Center
LANSING, Mich. — Nearly 70 people signed up for the bone marrow donor registry June 11 as a mid-Michigan man battling leukemia and the donor who saved his life looked on.
Andy Case of Eagle, Mich., was diagnosed in May 2001 with acute myelogenous leukemia, a fast-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Fortunately for him, more than 1,100 miles away in Texas, Ron Kirby of Dallas had signed up to become a bone marrow donor — and was a perfect match. A few weeks later, the mid-Michigan man received the transplant his doctor said saved his life.
The pair reunited at a bone marrow drive hosted by Michigan State University’s Breslin Cancer Center.
“It’s like getting together with a brother,” said Case of spending time with Kirby. “My family is his family. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him.”
Ken Schwartz, a doctor in MSU’s College of Human Medicine, has been treating Case since his diagnosis.
“He’s had a roller-coaster ride,” Schwartz said, referring to Case’s two near-death experiences and coma since the transplant. “But he’s doing so much better now, and without this transplant, Andy would not be here today.”
