The MSU COM Family Medicine Clinic strives to:
Provide excellent, comprehensive, continuous, compassionate, quality osteopathic primary health care to our patients, and
Partner with our patients to promote their health and wellness
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment: (abbreviated as OMT) is incorporated into the training and practice of osteopathic physicians. With OMT, osteopathic physicians (D.O.s) use their hands to diagnose illness and injury and to encourage your body's natural tendency toward good health. By combining all other available medical options with OMT, D.O.s offer their patients the most comprehensive care available in medicine today. Using a variety of OMT techniques, your D.O. will apply manual forces to your body's affected areas to treat structural abnormalities of your bones, joints and muscles, and will then apply specific corrective forces to relieve joint restrictions and misalignments. Based upon the complexity or severity of your problem, you may require more than one treatment.
Integrative Medicine: The term integrative or alternative medicine, as used in the modern western world, encompasses any healing practice "that does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine." Commonly cited examples include naturopathy and naturopathic medicine, chiropractic, herbalism, traditional Chinese medicine, meditation, yoga, biofeedback, hypnosis, bodywork, homeopathy and diet-based therapies, in addition to a range of other practices. It is frequently grouped with complementary medicine, which generally refers to the same interventions when used in conjunction with mainstream techniques, under the umbrella term Complementary and Integrative Medicine, or CIM. Our physicians have knowledge about, will consider, and may recommend complementary and alternative evidence-based treatment for you in addition to conventional medical treatment.
PAP Smears: A PAP smear is a screening test obtained while doing a pelvic exam. It is done most often to detect abnormal cells of a woman’s cervix and vagina. Abnormality can be caused by hormonal change, infection, inflammation, or pre-cancerous changes of the cells obtained. If the PAP smear is found to be abnormal, further diagnosis and treatment can be used to alleviate the abnormality.
Pediatric Care: From well child checks to general and sick child care, we offer pediatric services to children of all ages, one day old infants to 18 year old young adults.
Geriatric Specialties: We offer geriatric care to optimize an older person’s ability to enjoy good health, improve their overall quality of life, reduce need for hospitalization and enable them to live independently for as long as possible.
Diabetes/Chronic Disease Group Visits: Group visits are a unique way of delivering health care information that will become more common in the future. We have this type of visit available for our patients with similar health conditions who find it valuable to meet once a month as a group to share health information. Our groups are lead by a physician, who speaks about how health problems may be better managed through lifestyle changes such as change in diet, addition of exercise, and healthy ways to manage stress.
We currently offer two types of group visits. One group is for participants with Type 2 diabetes; it meets on the first Tuesday of every month. The second group is for participants with other serious health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. This group meets on the third Tuesday of every month. Group visits are an opportunity to learn more about your health problem; and to talk to others who may have the same issues and concerns about managing their health as you have.
Other Minor Procedures Available:
Mole and wart removal, colposcopy, birth control procedures, other gynecologic procedures, FAA Pilot Physicals

Your First Appointment
Please first download the new patient packet and medical release forms, which are located at the bottom of this webpage. Print these documents, fill them out completely, and then bring both documents to your appointment. This will save time for you and your physician at your first appointment.
Your physician will spend time with you reviewing and discussing the information on these forms; and with your help, will be able to focus on the issue and concerns which are your highest priority at this first visit. Several things are possible at this first visit. Your physician may perform a complete physical examination at this visit for your health maintenance. If you have already had a health maintenance exam in the past 6 to 12 months, or if you have other issues that require more immediate attention, then your physician may perform only a partial physical examination. You and your physician will then discuss whether screening tests or monitoring tests will be helpful to diagnose your concern or maintain your health. At your health maintenance visit, as well as each visit to our office, we strongly encourage each of our patients to request patient education materials.
Making the Most of Your Other Appointments
When you have a healthcare need, please contact our office and tell us the concerns or questions you have as accurately as possible, so that our staff may assist you in obtaining the exact type of appointment you will need with one of our clinician team members. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. This will allow time for the staff to check the accuracy of your address, phone number, and insurance information and to escort you to an exam room in a timely manner.
Our Physician Assistant
Our physician assistant will triage calls and see patients and their families. There may be times, however, after discussing your concern with your provider, that the physician assistant may ask that you or your family member come in to the office to be seen by one of our physicians on that same day or the next day.
When you are interested in obtaining test results, such as X-rays or lab studies, please remember that it takes an average of 72 hours for us to get a final report to share with you. It is for that reason, we ask your cooperation in not calling our office for test results until three days after your test was completed. Generally, if your test results are normal, we will send a card to you in the mail to advise you of the normal result.
We Care about YOU
Remember, you are the most important person in keeping yourself healthy. In addition to practicing good health habits, you can actively participate in your healthcare by:
Talking with your physician, or one of their other partners, on our healthcare team about your health or illness concerns and questions. We want to work with you to provide and coordinate the best possible healthcare for you and your family.
Bringing in your current medications, or a medication list of all the medicines that you are currently taking, to each appointment (including prescription, non-prescription, herbal medications, and supplements.)
Calling us when you need to cancel or re-schedule your appointment as soon as you know that you need to re-schedule. This will allow other patient(s) to be seen in the slot that was reserved for you, and for you to obtain a more convenient appointment for yourself.
Learning about and understanding your insurance benefits and coverage. There are so many different health insurance plans, they change so often, and have such varied benefits and co-payments that we are sometimes unsure about what is and may not be covered. If you have this information, it will help us help you in a more timely manner.
Finally, please remember that our goal at MSU COM Family Medicine Clinic, is to provide you and your family with excellent compassionate, coordinated, continuous, quality health and wellness care. Let’s work together to assure that happens for you and your family!
